More about the ‘Independent Jewish Voices’

Recently I wrote about a manifesto coming from a newly formed group of anti-Israel British Jews called “Independent Jewish Voices”. Here’s another discussion of the same subject by Dr. Jonathan Spyer, who quite convincingly demolishes the view that opponents of Israel, Jewish or otherwise, are prevented from speaking their minds.

    Dear Sir/Madam,
As a British and an Israeli citizen and a an ex I.D.F. reserve soldier who served in the occupied territories I was glad to read that an British organization similar to the Israeli “Peace Now” has been created.I consider that it is not an anti-zionist act.On the contary it is high time that the Gallilee and the Negev are settled by Jewish people and the West bank evacuated.
    Yours sincerely,
    Steve Freedman,

    Steve,
There is a continuum of opinion from criticism of Israel’s policies, through anti-Zionism and finally to antisemitism. Peace Now falls in the category of criticism of Israel’s policies. The actual declaration of the IJV is not anti-Zionist. However, there’s no question that some of the signatories are, for example Prof. Jacqueline Rose.
