A death penalty, speedily applied

Recently, Hezbollah officials promised the family of convicted murderer Samir Kuntar that he would be coming home soon. Kuntar, possibly the only Lebanese held in an Israeli prison, was convicted in 1979 of one of the most bone-chilling terrorist murders in recent history.

Mubarak disgusted by Saddam’s execution

Saddam“Don’t do it at this time,” Mubarak said he told Bush. “Why is it necessary to hang (him) just at the time when people are saying the holiday prayers[?]” — Jerusalem Post

We wonder what his opinion was when Egypt attacked Israel on Yom Kippur, 1973.

He also was upset by “shocking pictures, primitive pictures” that were posted on the Internet shortly afterwards. We hope that he felt the same about the video showing Daniel Pearl having his head sawn off.

Meanwhile, a Holocaust denial conference opened in Cairo last week. Mr. Mubarak hasn’t commented on this.

The two-state mirage

The US and Europe, along with the Olmert government and Mahmoud Abbas all officially espouse a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians. The great majority of Americans, if they care, would agree. For many people, a Jewish or Arab ‘extremist’ is just someone who doesn’t accept the two-state program.

But a few moments of thought indicate that a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank would not be viable or stable. The idea is only attractive because alternatives appear unthinkable.
