The Hamas strategy and how to beat it

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

News item:

Despite mounting international pressure for an end to hostilities between Israel and Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip, Hamas declared on Wednesday that it would not accept any permanent cease-fire with Israel.

According to the deputy head of Hamas’s political bureau, Moussa Abu Marzouk, the group would not talk about a permanent cease-fire so long as Israel continued its “occupation,” and would instead continue the “resistance.” He said that Hamas stood by its demand for Israel to immediately halt its offensive, to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and to open all of the border crossings.

What are Hamas’ immediate objectives?

It cannot defeat Israel militarily. Given time, Israel will destroy Hamas as an effective force. Despite their macho posturing, Hamas’ leaders know this.

They have so far been unable to achieve the international legitimacy  and control of the Palestinian Authority that they want, because they cannot agree to the necessary conditions: recognition of Israel’s right to exist, acceptance of prior agreements — the Oslo accord — and renunciation of ‘resistance’. All of these are explicitly contradicted by the Hamas charter.

Hamas also has difficulty overcoming the Western antipathy to racism, antisemitism, genocidal intent, misogyny, homophobia, etc.

So its strategy is to obtain legitimacy by attacking Israel’s. The intention is to so demonize Israel in world opinion that Hamas will appear as a relatively acceptable counterpart.

Therefore, the purpose of the thousands of rockets launched into Israel was not so much to hurt Israel — although the actual damage, psychological and economic, has been far greater than the small number of deaths might suggest — as to provoke Israel to respond.

Now Israel has responded, and Hamas will try to turn events to its advantage. Its goal will be to maximize civilian casualties and the appearance thereof, in order to force an end to the conflict before it is hurt beyond repair. We can expect that Hamas will continue to put Palestinian civilians in harm’s way, to exaggerate casualties and even manufacture atrocity stories, and to use its enormous apparatus of Middle Eastern and Western fellow-travelers to broadcast its propaganda worldwide.

Almost any imposed settlement will give Hamas an advantage because

  • It will gain huge credibility among Palestinians for having ‘defeated’ Israel.
  • No international monitoring or peacekeeping arrangement will be able to prevent it from re-arming.
  • An agreement will protect it from Israel.
  • Israel will be seen even more as a pariah among nations.

And, most important,

  • If Hamas is party to the agreement, it will be seen as a legitimate political entity, not just a terrorist gang.

This puts Hamas in a much better position to regain influence in the Palestinian Authority and ultimately to get control of the West Bank as well as Gaza.

What must Israel do? There are several things:

  • It must do its utmost to minimize civilian casualties.
  • It must counteract atrocity propaganda swiftly and credibly.
  • Nevertheless, Israel must destroy Hamas’ weapon supply and fortifications, eliminate Hamas’ leadership and kill enough of its army (estimated at 20,000) to neutralize its fighting ability.
  • It must re-occupy the Philadelphi corridor alongside the Egyptian border to make it impossible for Hamas to rearm.
  • It must not allow the conflict to be ended, despite international pressure, before the above are accomplished.
  • It must not agree to a settlement which in any way legitimizes Hamas.

How they ‘criticize Israel’ in Europe

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Everyone knows that ‘criticism of Israel’ and antisemitism are two distinct things. Here’s how they criticize Israel in Europe:

Assailants rammed a burning car into the gates of a synagogue in Toulouse, in southwest France, on Monday night.

A Jewish congregation in Helsingborg, in southern Sweden, also was attacked Monday night by someone who “broke a window and threw in something that was burning,” said police spokesman Leif Nilsson. Neighbors alerted rescue services before the fire took hold.

Someone also started a blaze outside the premises last week. And on Sunday slogans including “murderers … You broke the cease-fire” and “don’t subject Palestine to ethnic cleansing” were daubed on Israel’s embassy in Stockholm…

“Jihad 4 Israel” graffiti was found on six different locations across London and “Kill Jews” graffiti was scrawled on a bus stop in Jewish neighborhood of Temple Fortune.

“Jihad is the only solution for Palestine” was written on the door of a north London synagogue.

Last Wednesday evening, a gang of 15-20 youths, variously reported as “Middle Eastern” and “Asian,” marched down Golders Green High Road, in a predominantly Jewish area of London, shouting “Free, Free Palestine.” They reportedly also attempted to enter some kosher restaurants.

Last Thursday, on the same street, a group of Asian males drove a car shouting “Death to the Jews,” “Jews should be killed” and “Jewish bastards.”

There was also an attempt to set fire to a synagogue in Brondesbury, northwest London, on Sunday night. The attackers tried to smash a window but were prevented from doing so by a security film. They then attempted to set the synagogue door on fire using gasoline…

Police said burning rags were shoved through the mailbox of a Jewish home in Antwerp last weekend. Damage was limited and no arrests were made.

In Denmark, a 27-year-old Dane born in Lebanon of Palestinian parents is alleged to have wounded two young Israelis last week, opening fire with a handgun in a shooting that police suspect could be linked to the Gaza crisis. — Jerusalem Post

Israeli Embassy responds on UNRWA school incident

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

The following was received from the Israeli Embassy in Washington regarding the deaths of civilian Palestinians at the UNRWA school yesterday. Note the reference to secondary explosions, indicating that the school was used for storage of explosives.

Israel EmbassyJanuary 6, 2009
Dear Friends,

Today, initial investigations into reports of multiple Palestinians killed tragically in Jebaliya indicate that Hamas terrorists fired mortar bombs from a site which is ordinarily used as a school towards Israeli forces.

Israeli forces returned fire and a series of explosions followed, indicating the presence of munitions and explosives in the building. Israeli forces had no knowledge of those present at the site; however, it is clear that it was not operating as a school.

Israel later identified two of the casualties at the site as Imad and Hassan Abu Askhar, who served as heads of the Hamas mortar units in Gaza.

Israel regrets the loss of any innocent civilian lives.

Hamas has once again cynically chosen to use civilian sites from which to operate, thus endangering the safety of innocent civilians. This is not the first time that Hamas has fired mortars and rockets from schools, which deliberately uses civilians as human shields in their acts of terror. This was proven in the recent past with footage from an unmanned plane showing rockets and mortars being fired from the yard of an UNRWA school (click here for video).

Local Hamasniks, explosive Qurans, and more

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Everyone who thinks that the philosophy and methods of Hamas are confined to the Gaza strip and cannot come to America should look carefully at the video report of the violent San Francisco anti-Israel demonstration last Friday.

Here in Fresno, local Muslims from several mosques have joined forces with Peace Fresno — how an organization with ‘peace’ in its name can support Hamas is far from clear — to demonstrate against the Israeli “genocide” that they perceive in Gaza. Here is a promotional video of the event thoughtfully provided by some local ‘peace’ lovers. Although the Fresno happening was non-violent, the chants and anti-Israel lies were the same.

It is significant that — for what I believe to be the first time — the Imam of Fresno’s Islamic Cultural Center [ICCF], Seyed Ali Ghazvini, spoke at an anti-Israel demonstration (he is featured in the video).

This Friday, there will be another demonstration and this time there will be a significant counter-demonstration: Shaw & Blackstone at 4 PM.

Since even Peace Fresno can’t afford to admit that they support the racist, genocidal, misogynist, homophobic and antisemitic Hamas, they have to concentrate on the “Israeli war crimes of targeting mosques, schools, clinics, medics and innocent civilians in Gaza Strip” (from the ICCF website).

Let’s look at some of these ‘crimes’.

Here’s an IDF video of a mosque being attacked. Oops, see those secondary explosions? Must have been full of, er, explosive Qurans.

Ah yes, the criminal IDF bombs schools, too.  Here is the same UN school where Palestinians claim that 40 civilians were killed by Israeli fire, showing terrorists firing mortar shells right next to the door (h/t: Yid with Lid). This particular video is from 2007, but the IDF says it was returning fire to mortars from here. And here are some weapons found in another school today.

Did you know that not only were civilians killed but also the Hamas mortar team? And that the school was booby-trapped, with many of the dead being caused by secondary explosions?

Maybe the war crimes that we are talking about are being committed by Hamas, which has consistently used Gaza civilians as human shields for its activities?

Mads GilbertPossibly we should also look at the numbers of civilian casualties that the media are quoting. A whole lot of’ ‘information’ comes from this guy:

Mads Gilbert is a Norwegian doctor (note the attractive Norwegian scarf he is displaying) who is more a Doctor of Bullshit than a MD. An extreme Marxist and pro-Palestinian activist, he is used as a source by the NY Times, the BBC, CNN, etc. CAMERA (see link above) wonders “how he has the time to provide medical help, never mind ‘doing surgery around the clock’ as he claims”.

Palestinians have a long history of faking Israeli ‘atrocities’. Richard Landes has documented it exhaustively, and continues to do so. I suggest that we treat Palestinian reports, including photos, of civilian casualties very carefully.

Hamas wants to distract your attention from its war crimes by accusing Israel. It’s a lie, whether it comes directly from them or their supporters in Fresno.

KPFA and KFCF help Hamas

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Most people that call themselves ‘progressive’ today should have a difficult time supporting Hamas.

It’s hard to hide the fact that Hamas is viciously antisemitic, with goals that are frankly genocidal. It’s hard to hide — Hamas will tell it to you — their position that no Jewish state, within any borders is acceptable in historic Palestine. It’s hard to hide the fact that Hamas is just plain vicious, when they brag about shooting their political opponents — secular Palestinian nationalists — in the hands and legs “to prevent them from helping Israel”. And it’s hard to hide the fact that Hamas is being supported with money and weapons by Iran, which has expressed the desire to put an end to Israel.

Whether one favors a two-state solution or even a single ‘democratic’ state encompassing Jews and Arabs, it goes beyond the pale of ‘progressivism’ to support Hamas, which wants to kill or drive out all the Jews, establish fundamentalist rules for the treatment of women, put homosexuals to death, etc.

It should also be quite clear that if there is a possibility for a rapprochement between Israel and moderate Palestinians — if it’s not too late for this — then the situation in which 40% of the Palestinian population lives under control of Hamas, which is violently opposed to any such agreement, ensures that a peaceful solution will not be found.

Since Hamas has been in control of Gaza, in addition to thousands of missiles fired at Israel, they have been pursuing a parallel propaganda offensive to convince people that the cause of the conflict is not Hamas viciousness but the Israeli ‘siege’ of Gaza and ‘the occupation’. Their goal is to achieve legitimacy, to open the gates for the import of even more explosives and weapons, and ultimately to take over the West Bank as well.

Since the beginning of the present war, the central theme has been the suffering of Gaza civilians. Although this war is probably unique in the history of warfare in respect to the care being taken by one side to avoid hurting noncombatants, nevertheless some segments of the media have been almost frothing at the mouth in their condemnations of Israel (which, needless to say are based on exaggerations and plain lies).

Here are the results of this, this Friday in San Francisco. Some of the violent demonstrators shown are Palestinians, but many are not.

There has been no more consistent source of  anti-Israel incitement and one-sided propaganda in our region than Pacifica Radio’s KPFA, and Fresno’s KFCF which rebroadcasts it. Programs such as Democracy Now — which is not only heard daily on KFCF in Fresno but whose TV version appears on the Catholic Diocese-owned channel 49 — go far beyond the bounds of simply slanted reporting, providing a steady diet of falsehoods and demonization of Israel.

In recent days KPFA has pulled out all the stops in its rhetoric, with the goal of turning American opinion against the Israeli operation in Gaza. If the worldwide propaganda campaign succeeds in forcing a premature end to the operation, Hamas will emerge stronger than ever, with enhanced legitimacy and able to re-arm — exactly as happened with Hezbollah in Lebanon. In addition to the direct damage to Israel’s security, any ‘peace process’, such as it is, will be doomed.

KPFA and KFCF are supported by contributions from the progressive community, which possibly doesn’t understand the consequences of its actions. These stations are simply doing Hamas’ work.

If you are happy with the goals of Hamas and Iran, then contribute. Every dollar you give them might as well be used to buy explosives for Ismail Haniyeh.
